So it starts when Emily says, "Vanessa, go Google yourself."
Vanessa is slurping down a smoothie, ignoring her mother's latest lecture about being a proper lady ("I have boobs and I love shopping, how much girlier do you want me to be?"). She doesn't even ask Emily why she should do that: it's hot and they're bored. Plus, nobody needs a reason to Google herself.
She types in "Vaness," misses the "a" key, and hits "Enter." Google asks, "Do you mean Vanness?"
"You are such a ditz," Emily says.
Vanessa kicks her. "Shut up. I want to know what a 'Vanness' is." She clicks on the name, then follows the first link, which is titled "Asian Fanatics Forum: Vanness Wu." The first thing on the page is a large picture of an Asian boy (man?), who is shirtless and sporting the most gorgeous abs Vanessa has ever seen.
"Ew," Emily says.
"Hot!" Vanessa counters, and ignores Emily (who has never liked Asian guys anyway) for the next twenty minutes as she reads everything on the page. "Born 1978... He's thirty? No way. Part of a band called F4... Did a collaboration with a Korean singer named KangTa (oh, he's cute!)." Vanessa scrolls past what seems like hundreds of pictures, silent, and then adds, "Apparently, is allergic to shirts." Seventy percent of the pictures are of Vanness shirtless, almost shirtless, or showing off his lean, muscular body in some form or another.
Emily steals Vanessa's smoothie and drinks about half of it while Vanessa is distracted. "So is he your new crush now?" she asks, rolling her eyes. Vanessa has a new crush every other week, it seems.
"He's my god," Vanessa says mock solemnly, and as it turns out, this infatuation lasts for much longer than a week or two. One year later, a few months into her friendship with Ji-hye Moon, she shows her a picture of Vanness. 'He's hot, right?"
Ji-hye is silent for a few beats. "Oh. It's Vanness Wu."
"Oh my god, you know him!"
"Only barely!"
But that seals their friendship even more, and Ji-hye regrets ever mentioning that she knows Vanness Wu. Vanessa is completely infatuated with him, even though Ji-hye points out that it would be a pain to even go out to dinner with the guy, since all he eats are salads. Vanessa always ignores this, so Ji-hye always ends up rolling her eyes and thinking that, god or no god, Vaness Wu is a total pain in the ass.
("I bet he likes it in the ass, too."
"...That is so hot.")
