Ethan/Xuan - #28--Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou?
Ethan has a talent for embarrassing Xuan. For example, after that fiasco on Xuan's front lawn, Ethan picks up the habit of singing sappy songs to him. It wouldn't be so bad, because Ethan has a good voice, but he always manages to sing the sappiest, corniest parts when someone else is nearby.
The third time that Ethan sings Lost in Love to Xuan, with Lynn laughing in the background, Xuan turns beet red and stalks out of the room. He walks into his bedroom, closes the door, locks it, and sits on the bed.
A minute later, Ethan rattles the doorknob. "Xuan, open up!"
"No," Xuan says.
"Why not?"
"Because you keep embarrassing me!"
Ethan laughs. "Oh, come on, Xuan. You know I love you. That's why I do it."
"I don't care. It's still embarrassing!"
"You don't like my singing?"
"I don't like the songs you sing." Xuan walks over to the door and sits against it. "They're really corny."
"I've been told that we're really corny." Ethan chuckles, and Xuan laughs, too, softly.
"I still don't like it when you serenade me in front of people, though."
"Would you like me to serenade you in private, then?"
"Maybe. If you choose a better song."
Ethan clears his throat, and Xuan almost expects him to start singing Lost in Love again. But instead, he sings a new song, and his hoarse voice is soft and clear. Xuan closes his eyes and listens; there is nothing embarrassing about these lyrics.
"I never understood before. I never knew what love was for. My heart was broke, my head was sore. What a feeling."
And there is nobody else listening, because this song is for Xuan alone. They're his, these words shaped by Ethan's voice.
"Let it rain, I don't care," Ethan croons, "I'm yours and suddenly you're mine. Suddenly you're mine, and it's brighter than sunshine..."
